Following customs clearance, a convoy of 25 domestically manufactured tractor trucks, worth USD 1.5 million, set off from Khunjerab Pass in Xinjiang, China. These "Made in China" machines are on their way along the Karakoram Highway to Sost Port in Pakistan, marking a key link in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and a crucial point for global market distribution. The development was reported by Gwadar Pro on Thursday.
Since the beginning of 2024, 1,271 vehicles have crossed the border, delivering 12,432 tons of goods valued at over USD 95.26 million, according to local customs data. Khunjerab Pass, situated in Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County of Kashgar, is the only land border between China and Pakistan. Historically, this route was limited to eight months of operation due to challenging high-altitude weather conditions and harsh winters.
However, as of December 1, 2024, Khunjerab Pass has opened year-round, becoming the first high-altitude land port under BRI to operate continuously throughout the year. According to a Pakistani truck driver, Mr. Khan, this new development has created new business opportunities, especially in refrigerated transport, reducing logistical costs. With the Karakoram Highway now open year-round, goods can be transported from Karachi to Kashgar in just eight days.
This major shift in transportation infrastructure is not only helping improve trade relations but also enhancing the efficiency of moving goods, such as frozen seafood, between the two countries. This year, Khunjerab Pass has processed 3,962 travelers and handled 3,036.46 tons of agricultural products, marking a significant boost in cross-border economic activity.
