The Khunjerab Pass has officially transitioned into a year-round trade and travel route between Pakistan and China for the first time, marking a pivotal moment in the progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Previously operational only from April to November due to harsh winter conditions, the border will now remain open throughout the year following a new agreement between the two countries.
A virtual inauguration ceremony celebrated this development, with participation from high-ranking officials of Gilgit-Baltistan and China’s Xinjiang province. Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan described the year-round opening as a historic achievement for both the region and the nation, stating it will revitalize economic activity and promote uninterrupted cross-border trade.
Chinese and Pakistani officials praised the event as a symbol of strengthened bilateral ties. They highlighted the mutual benefits for residents and businesses in Gilgit-Baltistan and Xinjiang, including smoother customs processes, increased economic exchange, and a new level of cooperation under the CPEC vision.
The Xinjiang governor emphasised that the Khunjerab Pass stands as a symbol of development, peace, and prosperity. During the ceremony, a documentary showcased the customs clearance systems in place, and officials from both sides shared operational details, underlining the readiness for sustained year-round engagement.
At 15,500 feet, Khunjerab is the highest paved international border crossing in the world. The decision to keep it open year-round, now enabled under Article 2(3) of the 2013 bilateral agreement on border port management, began implementation in December. This move is expected to significantly impact regional development, economic collaboration, and the realisation of CPEC’s long-term goals.
