Gwadar University Approves Blue Economy, Considers AI Course for Economics Students
The University of Gwadar has approved the inclusion of Blue Economy as a key course in its BS Economics program, while the Department of Economics is also evaluating an interdisciplinary course on artificial intelligence and a proposal to mandate professional certification for students.
These decisions and proposals were deliberated during the second meeting of the Board of Studies of the Department of Economics, convened at the PCTVI Conference Hall under the chairmanship of Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Dr. Jan Muhammad. Chairperson of the Department of Economics Shama Suleman led discussions on academic and curriculum matters.
The Board reviewed a proposal to make professional certification compulsory for BS Economics students, aimed at supplementing academic qualifications with practical, industry-relevant skills. Members also examined the proposed introduction of an interdisciplinary course titled "AI for Everyone." The proposal was discussed in light of the growing role of artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and technology-driven skills in economics and other professional fields.
The Board formally approved the Blue Economy course for the BS Economics curriculum. Participants noted that Gwadar's coastal location and economic significance, along with the potential of maritime and coastal activities, make the subject particularly relevant to students pursuing economics. Various other proposals concerning the BS Economics curriculum were also reviewed, with participants discussing ways to align the program with changing academic, economic, and professional requirements.
Faculty member Suleman Samad, Director Quality Enhancement Cell Dr. Rabia Aslam, and Computer Science faculty member Ikram Baloch attended the meeting. Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Qayyum of the University of Turbat and Assistant Professor and Registrar Dr. Balach Rashid of Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences joined the proceedings through video link.
Board members emphasised the need for continuous curriculum improvement, interdisciplinary education, professional certification, and greater incorporation of emerging fields relevant to the region's economic potential. They observed that integrating such areas into the program could help students develop stronger academic foundations, practical competencies, and professional skills needed to respond to opportunities in an evolving economy.
