Thousands benefit as Gwadar hospital grows into a major regional healthcare hub

CPEC-backed hospital in Gwadar expands free medical services

Gwadar’s Pak-China Friendship Hospital is rapidly establishing itself as a cornerstone of healthcare in Balochistan, delivering essential medical services to tens of thousands of patients while highlighting the broader social impact of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

According to a report by CGTN, the China-assisted facility treated 48,656 patients in just the first two months of 2026, underscoring its growing importance in the region. Currently managing an average of around 1,200 patients daily, the hospital has significantly improved access to quality healthcare for residents of Gwadar and surrounding areas.

As a flagship project under CPEC, the hospital represents a key component of the wider initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, trade, and regional development between Pakistan and China. Beyond infrastructure and energy projects, CPEC is increasingly contributing to social development sectors, including healthcare and education.

During a recent visit to the facility, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasised that the success of CPEC should not be measured solely through physical infrastructure, but also through tangible improvements in human development indicators. He highlighted healthcare and education as critical areas where such progress is becoming evident.

The hospital is managed by the Indus Hospital and Health Network and offers a comprehensive range of services, including diagnostics, treatment, and inpatient care, all provided free of charge. This model has made quality healthcare accessible to communities that previously faced significant barriers in receiving medical attention.

Since its establishment, the hospital has treated over 650,000 patients, drastically reducing the need for residents to travel to distant cities for specialised care. As a result, Gwadar is increasingly emerging as a healthcare destination, with patients arriving not only from across Balochistan but also from neighbouring regions.

In addition to improving healthcare access, the project has also contributed to local economic development. More than 80 percent of the hospital’s 487 staff members have been recruited from the surrounding community, creating employment opportunities and building local capacity in the healthcare sector.

Looking to the future, the hospital has outlined ambitious expansion plans. These include increasing its departments from 15 to 25, establishing a School of Medical Technology, and eventually developing a full-fledged medical college and nursing school. These initiatives are expected to further strengthen healthcare delivery while contributing to long-term educational and professional development in the region.

As Gwadar continues to evolve under CPEC, the Pak-China Friendship Hospital stands as a powerful example of how strategic cooperation can deliver meaningful benefits to local communities, improving both quality of life and regional resilience.
