Pakistan Railways and GDA Advance Gwadar Rail Integration Plans
The Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) and Pakistan Railways have advanced high-level discussions on the proposed rail connection between Gwadar and the national railway network, marking a significant step forward in integrating the deep-sea port with Pakistan's broader transportation infrastructure.
Key issues including route alignment, land requirements, infrastructure development, and the establishment of a dedicated railway yard were thoroughly examined during a pivotal meeting between Project Director for the Gwadar Railway Yard, Jahanzeb Khan, and GDA Director General Moeen-ur-Rehman Khan. The deliberations reflect the growing momentum behind Gwadar's transformation into a fully connected trade and logistics hub under the CPEC framework.
Pakistan Railways is currently assessing multiple possible routes and feasibility options for the proposed connection, conducting detailed technical evaluations to identify the most viable and cost-effective alignment. The railway network extension is considered critical for unlocking Gwadar's full potential as a gateway for international trade and regional connectivity.
In parallel, a comprehensive feasibility study and transaction advisory services have been solicited for an approximately 675-kilometer Gwadar-Nokkundi railway link. This ambitious corridor would connect Gwadar Port to the existing railway network at Nokkundi, near the Pakistan-Iran border, creating a direct rail artery for goods moving to and from the port.
The proposed network is expected to significantly improve cargo movement efficiency, facilitate the transportation of mineral resources from Balochistan's resource-rich hinterland, and strengthen Gwadar's role as a premier gateway for trade and economic activity. Enhanced rail connectivity would also reduce dependency on road transport, lower logistics costs, and provide a more sustainable mode for moving bulk commodities.
As Gwadar continues to evolve as a cornerstone of Pakistan's economic future, the rail connectivity plan represents a foundational investment in the port's long-term viability and regional integration.
