Pakistan is set to take a significant digital leap as the government and telecom sector join forces to expand 5G services, AI-powered cloud infrastructure, and CPEC-driven connectivity. The announcement came during a high-level event attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Information Technology and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), including PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman and Secretary Zarrar Hashim. Zong’s executives briefed the minister on the company’s cutting-edge facilities and their role in strengthening Pakistan’s digital ecosystem.
Officials highlighted major achievements in telecom regulation, including tackling illegal SIMs and improving customer service. Cybersecurity has also advanced with the introduction of cyber audits, a re-verification system, and an eco-cyber framework.
Minister Fatima praised Zong for its contributions under the Connect 2030 roadmap, noting the addition of three new submarine cables to enhance connectivity and the removal of right-of-way charges to facilitate fibre optic network expansion. Wireless internet now reaches 98% of the population, with 5G services and satellite internet set to roll out soon.
The minister also acknowledged China’s pivotal role through CPEC, emphasizing the $60 billion investment that revitalized Pakistan’s infrastructure. The second phase of CPEC focuses on a digital corridor, improving fibre optic connectivity between Pakistan and China, ensuring faster and more efficient data transmission.
Zong’s establishment of AI-driven cloud infrastructure marks a milestone in Pakistan’s digital transformation, supporting data localization and AI policy implementation. AI-based cloud services are expected to be available by mid-next year. Additionally, a blockchain agreement with the Higher Education Commission for instant online degree verification will simplify processes for graduates.
The development of the Digital Silk Route is another step toward integrating Pakistan into global digital networks. Minister Fatima underlined the government’s commitment, backed by the prime minister and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), to strengthen the country’s telecom sector and implement Smart City initiatives in the near future. With these initiatives under the Connect 2030 roadmap, Pakistan is poised for major advancements in digital connectivity, cloud services, and AI applications.
