A significant engineering milestone has been reached at POWERCHINA’s Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project, with the successful completion of the joint hydrostatic test on the steel penstock bifurcations. The development marks a crucial step forward in ensuring the structural integrity and operational safety of the project’s core components.

The tested system comprises one pressure relief pipe along with three branch pipes, forming a highly complex structure designed to handle immense hydraulic pressure. Notably, the largest component within this setup features a sphere diameter of 14.6 metres and a maximum plate thickness of 130 millimetres. When filled with water, the structure weighs more than 12,000 tonnes, making it one of the largest and most technically demanding installations of its kind globally.

The hydrostatic test, which lasted for 64 hours, was conducted seamlessly, with all performance indicators meeting the required standards. The successful outcome demonstrates the strength, precision, and reliability of the welding, fabrication, and overall design processes involved in the construction of the penstock system.

According to the company, the results provide strong validation of the structure’s durability and operational readiness. This achievement lays a solid foundation for the safe and stable functioning of the generating units once the project becomes fully operational.

The Tarbela 5th Extension Project forms a key part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to enhance its hydropower capacity and ensure a more reliable energy supply. Upon completion, the project will add three generating units, each with a capacity of 470 megawatts. This will raise the total installed capacity of the Tarbela hydropower facility to 6,298 megawatts.

As the country’s largest hydropower installation, the expansion of Tarbela is expected to play a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s energy infrastructure. It will not only contribute to meeting growing electricity demand but also support long-term sustainability through increased reliance on clean and renewable energy sources.
