WAPDA Signs Rs972.6 Million MoU for Diamer Basha Community Schemes

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch community livelihood projects worth approximately Rs972.6 million in the Diamer Basha Dam project area, reinforcing its commitment to improving the socio-economic well-being of local communities alongside one of Pakistan’s largest water and hydropower developments.

The agreement was signed between the Diamer Basha Dam Project and the District Administration of Diamer to implement development schemes under the project's Confidence Building Measures (CBMs). The MoU was formalized by General Manager and Project Director Dr. Engr. Nazakat Hussain and Deputy Commissioner Diamer Lt. Muhammad Owais Abbasi (Retd.) in the presence of Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Secretary Arshad Majeed.

Under the initiative, livelihood projects will be executed through relevant government departments under the supervision of the district administration while ensuring active consultation with local communities. A joint monitoring committee comprising representatives from WAPDA, the district administration and community members will oversee implementation, maintain transparency and ensure the quality of the development works.

The newly announced package is part of WAPDA’s broader socio-economic development program for the Diamer Basha Dam region, under which Rs78.5 billion has been allocated for community welfare and public infrastructure. Several key projects, including the Thore Hydel Power Station, Thak Hydel Power Station and Cadet College Chilas, have already been completed under this initiative.

Being constructed on the Indus River, the Diamer Basha Dam is expected to significantly increase Pakistan’s water storage capacity, enhance hydroelectric power generation and strengthen the country's long-term water and energy security. Alongside its strategic infrastructure benefits, the project continues to prioritize sustainable development and improved living standards for communities residing in the surrounding areas.
