Pakistan’s Suki Kinari (SK) Hydropower Station, a landmark project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), was presented as a model for sustainable energy cooperation at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit 2025 in Tianjin, China. Featured in a special issue of China’s International Business Daily, the project highlighted Pakistan’s contributions toward regional green growth under the theme “Promoting the Shanghai Spirit: SCO in Action.”
Operational since September 2024 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the hydropower station has generated more than 2.7 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity by August 2025. This contribution has eased power shortages and advanced Pakistan’s renewable energy ambitions. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who led Pakistan’s delegation, emphasized that the project underscores Pakistan’s commitment to connectivity and environmental sustainability across Eurasia.
Beyond energy generation, SK Hydropower has created local impact by planting over 150,000 trees, building a trout hatchery, awarding scholarships, and upgrading critical road infrastructure including the N15 highway realignment. The project has also supported communities with disaster relief aid. Experts at the summit observed that the initiative serves as a model for other SCO nations seeking to balance energy security with environmental protection.
