Keti Bunder Port Development to Focus on Connectivity and Livelihoods
President Asif Ali Zardari has called for the integrated development of Keti Bunder Port, stressing the importance of connectivity, supporting infrastructure, environmental sustainability and local livelihoods.
He made the remarks during a presentation in Islamabad on the proposed development of Keti Bunder Port by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).
The President emphasised that the port project should be supported by reliable road connectivity, power and water supplies, industrial infrastructure and other essential facilities required for sustainable development. He also appreciated China’s continued interest in supporting Pakistan’s infrastructure and maritime sectors.
President Zardari said Keti Bunder has considerable potential to serve as an additional maritime gateway, strengthening Pakistan’s port and logistics network while promoting greater connectivity and trade. He called for close technical coordination between the Chinese delegation and relevant Pakistani authorities as the project progresses.
He further highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability, particularly the protection of the fragile Indus Delta ecosystem and the interests and livelihoods of local fishing communities. He encouraged continued technical engagement to refine the master plan and determine an appropriate framework for project implementation and financing.
The Chinese delegation presented the Conceptual Master Plan for Keti Bunder Port, which envisages a new deep-water maritime gateway featuring multiple terminals, logistics facilities and supporting infrastructure.
Under the proposed Phase-I development, the project includes a multi-purpose terminal with a 500-metre quay. The preliminary engineering cost for the phase has been estimated at approximately $522.34 million.
