A major advancement in Pakistan’s power transmission sector has been achieved with the installation of a world-first 765 kV auto-transformer at the Mansehra Substation Project. Delivered by POWERCHINA, this cutting-edge development represents a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward modernising its energy infrastructure.
The transformer, weighing approximately 225 tonnes, is a single-phase, auto-coupled unit equipped with constant-flux voltage regulation. It incorporates an advanced on-load tap-changing system alongside a three-stage cooling mechanism, ensuring efficient performance under varying load conditions. Notably, this transformer sets a new global benchmark among AC transformers in its category, offering both the highest step-voltage capacity and the widest tap range.
This installation addresses a long-standing technological gap in Pakistan’s 765 kV extra-high voltage (EHV) transmission network. It also marks the transition of the Mansehra substation into the core equipment installation phase, signalling steady progress toward operational readiness.
Project officials have highlighted that once completed, the substation will significantly enhance grid stability and contribute to mitigating electricity shortages in key regions. By enabling improved voltage regulation and transmission efficiency, the project is expected to strengthen the reliability of power supply across the network.
The Mansehra Substation Project forms part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to upgrade its transmission systems and optimise energy distribution. In the upcoming phase, six additional main transformers will be installed, accelerating overall development and supporting a more balanced and efficient energy mix.
Upon completion, the facility is set to play a crucial role in ensuring long-term energy security, improving power reliability, and supporting sustainable economic growth across the country.
