Govt Accelerates Gwadar Safe City Project With Modern Surveillance System

The government has started installing more than 100 towers and poles across key locations in Gwadar as part of the Gwadar Safe City project, marking significant progress toward transforming the port city into a modern, secure, and technologically advanced urban centre.

Officials associated with the project said rapid development work is underway under the broader vision of developing Gwadar into a smart city equipped with modern surveillance and security infrastructure. The Safe City initiative is considered one of the most important urban security projects currently being implemented in the region.

According to project officials, the total cost of the Gwadar Safe City project is estimated at approximately Rs7.5 billion. Under the initiative, around 760 advanced surveillance cameras will be installed at 135 strategic and high-traffic locations across the city.

The surveillance network will provide effective monitoring coverage across nearly 145 square kilometres, significantly improving the city’s security and monitoring capabilities. Officials stated that the installation of towers and poles is a key phase of the infrastructure rollout required for the deployment of the camera systems.

The project also includes the construction of a central complex and a command and control centre, which are progressing rapidly. Once operational, the facility will enable real-time monitoring, coordinated emergency response, and centralized management of surveillance operations throughout the city.

Project officials described the Gwadar Safe City initiative as a critical requirement for the city’s future development, especially considering Gwadar’s increasing commercial, economic, and strategic importance under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The initiative is expected to strengthen law and order, improve public safety, support traffic management, and create a more secure environment for residents, businesses, and investors. Authorities believe the project will also contribute to boosting investor confidence and supporting long-term economic activity in the port city.

Officials noted that the project represents an important step toward enhancing crime prevention and enabling faster response to emergencies through the use of modern technology and integrated surveillance systems.

The Safe City project is being implemented using advanced technologies including high-resolution CCTV cameras, facial recognition systems, vehicle number plate recognition cameras, PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras, thermal imaging systems, and real-time monitoring solutions.

The project will also feature fiber optic communication infrastructure, digital data storage and analytics systems, solar power backup solutions, and a fully integrated command and control network designed to support law enforcement agencies and emergency services.

Authorities said the system’s primary objectives include timely crime detection, monitoring of suspicious activities, traffic regulation, effective emergency response management, and improved coordination between relevant agencies.

In addition to enhancing public safety, the Gwadar Safe City project is expected to contribute to tourism growth, increased business activity, and stronger international confidence in Gwadar as an emerging economic and maritime hub.

Officials believe the initiative will play a key role in supporting the city’s transformation into a secure, modern, and globally competitive smart port city aligned with future urban development and regional connectivity goals.
