Gwadar Port Gains Global Significance Amid Regional Shifts

Gwadar Port’s global importance is steadily increasing as evolving regional dynamics reshape trade and connectivity patterns, according to Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) President Haji Muhammad Ayub Miryani.

Addressing a gathering of business leaders in Islamabad via video link, Mr Miryani emphasized the need for timely and effective measures to capitalise on expanding trade opportunities in Balochistan and across the wider region. The meeting, chaired by Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, focused on strategies to strengthen Pakistan’s economic integration with regional markets.

Highlighting practical steps, the QCCI president called for the introduction of a ferry service from Gwadar, noting that it could significantly enhance both domestic commercial activity and international trade flows. He also proposed extending the operational hours of the N-250 Ramdan-Gwadar business corridor and market from 18 hours to a full 24-hour cycle, enabling uninterrupted economic activity and improved logistics efficiency.

Mr Miryani pointed out that multiple countries, particularly from the Persian Gulf and Central Asia, have shown growing interest in utilising Gwadar Port as a trade route. He revealed that several companies are already in contact with the chamber to explore potential business opportunities linked to the port.

To further facilitate international trade, he urged authorities to pursue TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) membership for Gwadar, which would simplify cross-border cargo movement. Additionally, he recommended allowing Afghan transit trade through the port and offering transshipment facilities to Iranian investors, measures he believes would significantly enhance regional economic cooperation.

The QCCI leadership stressed that Gwadar’s rising importance is closely tied to shifting geopolitical and economic trends in the region. However, Mr Miryani underscored that this potential must be matched with proactive policy implementation to translate opportunities into tangible trade outcomes.

According to the chamber, the proposals presented at the Islamabad meeting encompass a combination of operational improvements, logistical enhancements and regulatory support. These steps are viewed as essential for strengthening Gwadar Port’s role not only within Balochistan but also as a key gateway for regional and international trade.
