Gwadar Port Launches Commercial Bunkering Services for Global Shipping

Gwadar Port has successfully completed its first commercial bunkering operation, marking a major milestone in the expansion of its maritime services and reinforcing its growing role as a regional trade and logistics hub. The successful ship refuelling operation represents another step toward transforming Gwadar into a comprehensive port capable of serving the evolving needs of international shipping.

The operation, carried out between July 9 and 11, was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Gwadar Port Authority (GPA), National Logistics Cell (NLC), Gwadar International Terminals Limited (GITL) and global energy company Vitol Asia. During the operation, the LNG carrier Enugu, jointly owned by QatarEnergy, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Vitol, received 2,500 metric tonnes of very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO).

The 285.4-metre-long vessel was successfully refuelled by the bunker barge Marine Ista, while Pakistan Customs, port authorities and local shipping agent Pak Traders Gwadar ensured the operation was completed safely and efficiently. The successful execution demonstrates Gwadar Port’s readiness to provide internationally recognized bunkering services alongside its existing cargo handling operations.

Industry experts believe the introduction of commercial bunkering services will strengthen Pakistan’s blue economy by generating new sources of foreign exchange, increasing port revenues and attracting more international shipping traffic. The expanded service portfolio is also expected to improve Gwadar’s competitiveness as a preferred stop for vessels operating across regional and international maritime routes.

Port authorities stated that the successful operation formally launches commercial bunkering services at Gwadar Port and opens the door for more international vessels to refuel in the future. The development aligns with the vision of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to establish Gwadar as a leading regional trade, logistics and energy hub while creating new opportunities for marine services, investment and local employment.
