Preparations are underway for the 9th meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Gwadar under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as officials reviewed the progress of completed, ongoing and proposed development projects in the port city.

The preparatory meeting was chaired by Planning Commission Secretary Dr Muhammad Tahir Noor and attended by senior officials from federal ministries, divisions and relevant agencies. Director General Gwadar Development Authority Moeen-ur-Rehman Khan and Director General Operations Gwadar Port Authority Dawood Kalmati also participated through video link.

During the meeting, officials reviewed several major CPEC initiatives, including the Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan 2017-2050, Pak-China Friendship Hospital, Gwadar Port and Free Zone, New Gwadar International Airport, East Bay Expressway, Pak-China Technical and Vocational Institute, as well as water supply and desalination projects.

The DG GDA briefed participants on the implementation of the Smart Port City Master Plan and proposed expanding the Pak-China Friendship Hospital to 300 beds. He also suggested establishing medical and nursing colleges as part of future CPEC projects to strengthen healthcare and training facilities in Gwadar.

Another proposal focused on developing a modern fish landing jetty, fish harbour and boat-building industry at West Bay/Padi Zir. The initiative aims to improve facilities for local fishermen, create new business opportunities and contribute to the growth of Gwadar’s economy.

The meeting was also informed that Phase-I of the Gwadar Free Zone has been completed, while development work on Phase-II is currently underway. Future priorities include the construction of a breakwater, dredging of berthing areas and channels, and improved water supply facilities for industries operating in the zone.

Relevant agencies were directed to finalize updated progress reports, development priorities and future roadmaps ahead of the 9th CPEC Joint Working Group meeting, scheduled for next week. The preparations are aimed at strengthening coordination and further accelerating development initiatives in Gwadar under CPEC.
