Pakistan and China have reaffirmed their mutual commitment to drive industrial development under the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The renewed focus was the result of a strategic meeting between Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal, and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Sun Weidong, held on Saturday.
Ahsan Iqbal highlighted Pakistan’s “Five Es” framework, a key component of the broader URAAN Pakistan initiative, noting its alignment with the ambitions of CPEC Phase II. The upcoming phase is expected to prioritise industrial expansion, export growth, and the introduction of advanced technology into Pakistan’s economic landscape.
The Minister stressed the urgent need for cultivating a skilled and knowledgeable workforce to sustain new industrial sectors. Additionally, he emphasised the critical role of business-to-business (B2B) partnerships in establishing enduring economic linkages that benefit both nations. These measures, he said, are fundamental for achieving inclusive development and deeper bilateral integration.
Expressing appreciation for China’s consistent support, Iqbal described the Chinese development model as an inspiration for Pakistan’s economic strategy. He also recalled Sun Weidong’s diplomatic tenure in Islamabad, a period during which CPEC evolved from a concept to a transformative infrastructure and energy programme.
Vice Foreign Minister Sun commended Pakistan’s Five Es vision, calling it an insightful approach to economic sovereignty and regional stability. He reaffirmed China’s strong interest in fostering collaboration in manufacturing, trade, and workforce development.
The session concluded on an optimistic note, with both sides expressing confidence that CPEC Phase II will create employment opportunities, upgrade Pakistan’s industrial base, and reinforce the strategic partnership that has flourished for decades.
