Partnership seeks to support scientific discovery, pharmaceutical applications and academic opportunities in the region

Pakistan-China Collaboration to Promote Medicinal Plant Research in Gilgit-Baltistan

Karakoram International University (KIU) has entered into a strategic partnership with Chinese company Ningxia through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting the cultivation, scientific research and commercial utilization of medicinal plants in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The collaboration represents an important step toward exploring the rich biodiversity of the region and harnessing its potential for healthcare, pharmaceutical innovation and economic development. Under the agreement, both organizations will work together to establish a dedicated research center at KIU that will focus on the identification, study and development of indigenous medicinal plant species.

According to university officials, the proposed center will conduct scientific research to evaluate the therapeutic properties of locally available medicinal plants and assess their potential applications in the pharmaceutical sector. The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of evidence-based herbal products while encouraging the sustainable use of natural resources found in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The partnership also aims to bridge academic research with commercial opportunities by exploring ways to transform medicinal plant resources into value-added products. Through scientific analysis and innovation, the project seeks to create new prospects for investment and entrepreneurship within the region’s emerging bioeconomy.

In addition to advancing research, the center will provide valuable learning and development opportunities for students, researchers and academic professionals. Participants will gain access to specialized studies, research projects and practical experience related to medicinal plant cultivation, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences.

Experts believe that Gilgit-Baltistan’s unique climate and ecological diversity make it an ideal location for medicinal plant research. The region is home to a wide variety of plant species traditionally used in local healthcare practices, many of which possess significant scientific and commercial potential.

The collaboration between KIU and Ningxia reflects growing academic and technological cooperation between Pakistan and China. By combining research expertise with industry knowledge, the initiative is expected to support innovation, strengthen scientific capacity and contribute to the long-term development of the medicinal plant sector.

As the project moves forward, stakeholders anticipate that the research center will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, scientific advancement and sustainable economic growth, helping position Gilgit-Baltistan as an important hub for medicinal plant research and development in the region.
