Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the SCO charter during the 25th Council of Heads of State meeting in Tianjin, China. He emphasized the importance of the Shanghai spirit, highlighting Pakistan’s consistent dedication to regional cooperation and integration.
He noted that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), exemplifies SCO’s vision for economic connectivity and regional integration. Pakistan, he stressed, respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all SCO members, adheres to international treaties, and expects the same principle to be upheld by others.
Addressing resource-sharing issues, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of uninterrupted access to water under existing treaties, calling it essential for the SCO’s effective functioning and long-term goals. He reiterated Pakistan’s belief in diplomacy, dialogue, and multilateralism, adding that Pakistan seeks peaceful and stable relations with all neighbors and supports structured dialogue to resolve disputes for lasting peace in South Asia.
Sharif also condemned terrorism in all its forms, referring to the sacrifices made by Pakistan in combating extremism and exposing foreign involvement in recent terror incidents in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He stressed that stability in Afghanistan is crucial for regional peace and expressed optimism about the outcomes of Pakistan-China-Afghanistan trilateral talks.
The Prime Minister appreciated global support, particularly from China, in the aftermath of recent floods and highlighted Pakistan’s economic recovery efforts over the past 18 months. He also called for an immediate end to Israeli aggression in Gaza, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for a two-state solution with pre-1967 borders and Al Quds Al Sharif as the Palestinian capital.
