WAPDA Spends Rs1.9 Billion on Development in Mohmand Dam Area

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has spent Rs1.9 billion on socio-economic development schemes in areas surrounding the Mohmand Dam Project as part of its Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) aimed at improving living standards for local communities.

According to WAPDA, a total of Rs4.5 billion has been allocated for 54 development projects identified by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in consultation with local representatives under the project’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework.

In an official statement, WAPDA said Phase-I of the initiative has already resulted in the completion of 18 development schemes across the project region. These projects cover a range of sectors including infrastructure development, drinking water supply, healthcare, education, sports facilities, and electricity provision.

Officials said the socio-economic initiatives are designed to ensure that communities residing in and around the project area directly benefit from the large-scale hydropower development. The programs are also intended to support sustainable community growth and improve access to basic public services in underserved regions.

WAPDA further stated that work is currently underway on several major development schemes, including the construction of the Abazai-Yousuf Baba Road and a drinking water supply project for Sappare Mulagori. These projects are expected to improve regional connectivity and provide better access to clean drinking water for local residents.

As part of its education-focused initiatives, WAPDA announced that construction work on five schools will begin soon in the districts of Mohmand, Bajaur, and Malakand. The planned institutions include Government Primary School Shaheed Banda, Government Girls Primary School Shaheed Banda, and Government Primary School Daryab Kor in Tehsil Pindyali.

Additional schools include Government Girls Primary School Johar in Bajaur district and Government Girls Primary School Ghwand in Malakand district. Officials said the projects aim to improve educational infrastructure and increase access to quality education, particularly for children in remote communities.

The progress update was shared during a meeting reviewing development schemes being implemented under the Confidence Building Measures of the Mohmand Dam Project. According to WAPDA, the authority remains committed to carrying out social welfare and infrastructure initiatives alongside the dam’s construction activities.

The Mohmand Dam Project, currently under construction on the Swat River, is one of Pakistan’s major water and energy infrastructure projects. The dam will have a water storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet and is expected to play an important role in improving water management and irrigation support in the region.

In addition to water storage benefits, the project is expected to generate 800 megawatts of low-cost and environmentally friendly hydropower. WAPDA also stated that the dam will provide approximately 300 million gallons of water per day to Peshawar for municipal use, helping address the city’s growing water requirements.

Through its combined focus on infrastructure development, energy generation, and community welfare, the Mohmand Dam Project is being viewed as a significant contributor to regional socio-economic progress and long-term development.
