Gwadar Port Pushes to Expand Iran Trade via Gabd-Rimdan Corridor

Noorul Haq Baloch Identifies Transport, Customs, Security, and Infrastructure Gaps as Key Hurdles

Gwadar Port Pushes to Expand Iran Trade via Gabd-Rimdan Corridor

Gwadar Port Chairman Noorul Haq Baloch has called for the removal of transportation, customs, security, and infrastructure-related obstacles to expand trade with Iran through Gwadar Port and make greater use of the Gabd-Rimdan border corridor.

He expressed these views during a meeting with a delegation of the Gwadar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where participants discussed cross-border and transit trade, customs procedures, and opportunities to utilise the shorter land route linking Gwadar with Iran. Gwadar Port Director General Dawood Kalmati attended the meeting.

The business delegation included Taftan exporter Amanullah Jamaldini, former chamber presidents Jaheend Hoth and Shamsul Haq Kalmati, and former general secretary Khalid Saif. The participants examined issues related to the International Road Transport (TIR) system, customs clearance, container movement, transportation arrangements, and security along the trade route.

Business representatives emphasised the need for adequate parking areas, vehicle weighbridges, and other essential infrastructure at the Gabd-Rimdan crossing to facilitate the movement of commercial vehicles and improve the efficiency of cross-border trade. The meeting also focused on streamlining customs procedures, removing operational bottlenecks, and ensuring smoother movement of containers between Gwadar Port and the Iranian border.

Participants were informed that deficiencies in border infrastructure and other trade-related issues would be taken up with customs authorities and relevant government departments during an upcoming meeting in Gwadar.

Earlier, on October 8, a meeting chaired by the Director General of Transit and Trade Customs in Karachi reviewed obstacles affecting Iran-bound trade through Gwadar Port as well as matters concerning implementation of the TIR system. The Karachi meeting decided to hold a follow-up session in Gwadar involving government officials, traders, and clearing agents to identify practical solutions to the challenges affecting cross-border commerce.

The proposed Gwadar meeting will examine border facilities, customs clearance procedures, transportation arrangements, and other trade-related matters, with the broader objective of strengthening commercial connectivity between Gwadar Port and Iran through the Gabd-Rimdan corridor.
